The Best Way to Feel at Home Is to Serve

When you stop watching and start helping, something shifts. You stop being a guest and start being part of the family.

Why We Serve

This Church Runs on People Like You

River Valley is not a professional production. It is a community of people who have decided to show up – for each other, for the city, and for the people who haven’t found their way in yet.

Every Sunday, volunteers set up chairs, brew coffee, hold babies, run the sound board, and greet the family who just moved here and doesn’t know anyone.

That work is what happens at River Valley.

And here’s what most people who serve tell us: they got more than they gave.

“Serving is how you stop attending a church and start belonging to one.”

“You don’t need experience. You need to be willing to show up.”

“There is a spot here that fits who you are and what you’re good at.”

Where You Fit

Pick Your Team

Seven teams. All of them matter. Each one plays a part in reaching, helping, and connecting people to Jesus. Read through and see what fits – then sign up below. Not sure where you fit? Fill out the form below and we’ll help you find the right team.

Hospitality and fellowship at RVC

Greeting & Hospitality

The first face people see and the reason Sunday morning feels like home.

This team is the church’s front door – literally and emotionally. You’re the reason a nervous first-timer feels like they made the right call. From the parking lot to the lobby, from the coffee bar to the donut table, every role on this team is about making people feel expected and wanted before the service even starts. No special skills required – just bring a friendly attitude and a willingness to take care of people.

What it involves:

  • Sunday morning arrival 20–30 minutes before service
  • Greeting in the parking lot, at the entrance, and throughout the lobby
  • Directing guests to kids check-in, the Connections Spot, restrooms, and seating
  • Brewing and serving coffee, setting up donuts, keeping things stocked
  • Being a friendly, approachable presence for anyone who walks in

RVC Kids

Give a few hours and change the trajectory of a kid’s Sunday – and maybe more than that.

Serving in RVC Kids is one of the most direct ways to invest in the next generation at River Valley. Whether you’re in the nursery holding babies while parents worship, leading a preschool activity, or running an elementary small group, you’re giving kids a reason to love church and a face that knows their name.

A background check is required for all Kids volunteers – no exceptions.

What it involves:

  • Sunday morning serving during one service (rotating schedules available)
  • Nursery (infant care), Preschool (ages 3-K), or Elementary (1st-6th grade)
  • One-time background check and volunteer training before you start
  • Consistent presence – your kids will remember you

RVC Students

A teenager needs one adult outside their family who believes in them. Be that person.

Leading in RVC Students means showing up for Dwell on Wednesday nights and being genuinely present for teenagers. You don’t need a theology degree. You need to be a consistent, trustworthy adult who listens more than lectures and shows up week after week.

Small group leaders are the core of the student ministry – same group, same students, every week. That consistency is what changes a teenager.

What it involves:

  • Wednesday evening commitment (weekly)
  • Small group leadership or support role based on fit
  • Background check and student ministry training
  • Building real relationships with students over time – not a one-and-done commitment

Worship & Production

If you’ve got a gift for music or technology, Sunday mornings need you.

The Worship and Production team is what makes Sunday mornings feel like Sunday mornings. Musicians and vocalists who lead the room in worship. Sound engineers who make sure everyone can hear. Lighting and screen operators who create the environment. Each role takes the craft seriously – because the people in those seats deserve excellence.

Worship (Musicians + Vocalists):

  • Proficiency on your instrument or voice – we audition for these roles
  • Sunday morning rehearsal attendance required
  • Commitment to the team and the schedule

Production (Sound, Lighting, Screens):

  • Operating the sound board, lighting rig, or ProPresenter/IMAG
  • Training provided for willing learners with no prior experience
  • Sunday morning arrival before service for setup and soundcheck

Ushers

Helping people find their seat and keeping the service running smoothly.

Ushers make sure every service feels organized and welcoming. You’re the team that helps people find seats, assists with offering, manages the flow of the room, and quietly handles anything that comes up so the rest of the congregation can focus on worship.

What it involves:

  • Seating guests and helping people find open spots
  • Assisting with offering collection
  • Managing flow during the service (doors, aisles, communion)
  • Being a calm, helpful presence if anything unexpected comes up

Facilities & Grounds

A well-kept campus tells people they’re valued before they ever step inside.

The facilities at River Valley are how the community meets the church for the first time – in the parking lot, at the entrance, in the lobby. Keeping the campus clean, functional, and well-maintained is a direct act of hospitality. If you like working outdoors or have landscaping skills you’d like to put to use, this team needs you.

What it involves:

  • Grounds maintenance and landscaping
  • Campus cleanliness and upkeep between services and events
  • Flexible scheduling – not exclusively Sunday mornings

Parking Lot

Your golf cart awaits – before anyone even reaches the front door.

The Parking Lot team is where the Sunday experience actually begins. A friendly wave, a quick hello, and helping people get where they need to go – it all sets the tone before anyone walks through the door. Rain or shine, you’re the first face of River Valley.

What it involves:

  • Driving the golf cart to shuttle guests from parking to the front door
  • Greeting people as they arrive on campus
  • Assisting families, elderly, and first-time visitors
  • Sunday morning arrival about 30 minutes before service
  • Must have a valid driver’s license to operate the golf cart

Questions About Serving

Do I have to be a member of the church to serve? +

No. You don’t have to be a member, and you don’t have to have been attending for a specific length of time. If you want to serve and you’re connected to River Valley in any way, we want to hear from you. Some teams – especially those working with kids and students – do require a background check regardless of membership status.

How much time does serving require? +

It depends on the team. Greeting & Hospitality, Kids, and Ushers serving typically means one Sunday morning per week or every other week, arriving 20-30 minutes before service. Hospitality means helping with coffee, donuts, and keeping the lobby welcoming before and after services. Production means arriving for soundcheck. Student ministry means Wednesday evenings. Facilities and Grounds is the most flexible. When we reach out, we’ll talk through what works for your schedule.

I’ve never served at a church before. Will I know what I’m doing? +

Yes. Every team has a lead who will train you and walk you through everything before you’re on your own. We don’t throw people in the deep end. You’ll be introduced to the team, shown what to do, and given time to get comfortable before you’re doing it solo. Most people feel confident within their first two or three Sundays.

What if I try a team and it’s not the right fit? +

Let us know. Seriously – it is not a big deal. We would rather help you find the right spot than have you stuck somewhere that’s not working. There are enough teams and enough variety that we can almost always find a better fit.

I have skills in a specific area – graphic design, video, tech, photography. Can I use them here? +

Absolutely. We have a constant need for people with creative and technical skills – design, photography, video production, social media, communications, and more. Fill out the form and mention what you do. we’ll figure out where those gifts fit.

Do I have to commit to serving every single week? +

Most teams work on rotation – you’re not necessarily expected every Sunday. The frequency depends on the team and your availability. The most important thing is consistency over time, not perfection every week. Life happens. We just need to be able to count on you when you’re scheduled.

My teenager wants to serve. Is that possible? +

Yes. Students at RVC serve in multiple capacities – on Sunday morning teams, at church events, and in outreach contexts. Connect with Austin at austin@myrivervalley.church for student serving pathways, or mention it in the form below.

I have questions before I’m ready to sign up. Who do I talk to? +
